Army Cadet Force – Make Your Mark

     Become an Army Cadet
The Army Cadet Force (ACF) has over 47,000 cadets in almost 1,700 detachments all over the country and is one of the biggest and best gangs around. When it comes to action, excitement and adventure, it’s hard to find anything that beats the Army Cadets.

Become an Army Cadets and you’ll be spending your spare time taking part in adventurous activities like rock climbing, mountain biking, archery and abseiling. There will also be plenty of change to play all your favourite sports because the ACF has competitions for both boys and girls at county, regional and national level.
OK, so you might end up a little wet and muddy, but wouldn’t you rather be having the time of your life with some great new mates, instead of just sitting in front of a TV or computer alone in your room?
To find out more, explore our website, check out some of the videos and complete our simple online form – www.armycadets.com

    What you’ll do

Being an Army Cadet means that you get to do lots of activities you wouldn’t normally do. You won’t be part of the Army, though you will get a uniform, free of charge, and will just have to get yourself some good boots. Activities are provided at very low cost or even free.
If you’ve ever wanted to do the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, that’s something we can help you with, and your cadet activities can even count towards proper qualifications like BTEC First Diplomas, which are equivalent to four GCSEs.
See the website links to find out more about the activities:
At the detachment, Army Proficiency Certificate, Adventurous Training, Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, Expeditions and  Annual Camp
But above all, being an Army Cadet is about having fun and making good friends.

    Benefits
Becoming an Army Cadet has heaps of benefits. The most obvious being that you get to take part in loads of exciting and challenging activities such as fieldcraft, adventurous training, first aid, music, sports and shooting, to name but a few.
When you join as a cadet you will make lots of new friends and get the opportunity to go on annual camp where you will meet cadets from other detachments in your county. You may even get to go on expeditions to amazing places in the UK and sometimes even abroad.
The Army Proficiency Certificate (APC) training syllabus will teach you leadership skills, discipline and give you self-confidence you never thought possible.  You will learn a wide range of transferable skills such as: the ability to command tasks; make decisions under pressure; plan and organise tasks and work as an effective team player as well as independently. These skills will equip you for life and add an extra string to your bow at times when competition for college places and employment is fierce.
Through your cadet training you can also gain valuable qualifications such as the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, BTEC First Diploma in Public Services or Music (the equivalent of 4 GCSE’s at A-C level or 4 Standard Grades at levels 1-3 in Scotland) or the ILM Certificate in Team Leading.
A survey of cadets in 2010 gave some interesting results:

    Volunteer Police Cadets
The aim of the Volunteer Police Cadets Programme is to enhance our cadets ability to contribute and achieve, and this is firmly rooted in all the training we provide to our cadets, and their leaders.

Through our varied training programme, you will have the opportunity to develop all the transferable skills you will need to support you in the modern and competitive employment world, regardless of your previous experience with education.

    This includes:

  • Getting involved in exciting projects to help your local community and develop your local area, giving you the opportunity to use your imagination and ideas to help people, and build valuable problem-solving skills.
  • Learning about policing in relation to the community, the law and what it means to be a good citizen through expert lessons delivered by police officers and professionals.
  • Becoming both a key team player and a strong leader, able to play an active part in achieving your units goals and ambitions. You will develop skills and an achievement record which will support you throughout your future.
  • Having adventures – from physical activities at your weekly meetings to outward bound competitions and camping excursions, and the Duke of Edinburgh Scheme you’ll certainly never get bored!
  • As a cadet you will have the opportunity to achieve both a BTEC in Public Services (equivalent to 4 GCSEs), and a Duke of Edinburgh Award in Bronze, Silver and Gold (depending on your age and length of service as a cadet) both of which are highly respected and internationally recognised qualifications. All of our training is tailored to assist you in easily achieving and recording evidence to complete these qualifications, both of which cover the following elements:
  • Service (helping other people in the local community)
  • Expeditions (training for, planning and completing a journey on foot or horseback, by boat or cycle)
  • Skills (covering almost any hobby, skill or interest)
  • Physical Recreation (sport, dance and fitness)
  • Our motto is “it’s not where you’ve come from; it’s where you’re going that counts”. We believe every young person should have the opportunity to fulfil their potential. We are continually working hard to deliver a training programme that can make that a reality for our cadets, through supporting their personal and social development regardless of background or ability, and by providing qualifications to support their personal and professional future.

    Join as an Air Cadet

As an Air Cadet, the opportunities are endless. What other organisation gives you the opportunity to spend part of your weekend at 3,000 ft in a light aircraft?

How about learning to handle the L98 Cadet Rifle so that you can hit the target every time? Maybe you’d prefer to compete in sports events across the country, or complete expedition training as part of the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award?

Air Cadets across the Region are doing all of this — and more! Here are just a few of the activities available to you as an Air Cadet:

    Flying
From your first Air Experience Flight, right through to your first solo on a RAF flying scholarship, the Air Cadets can help you achieve your dream of flying.

    Gliding
Go solo before you can drive! Cadets have progressive training, from their first Gliding Induction Course (GIC) up to scholarship standard (solo) and even all the way to glider pilot!

    Sports
Compete or play just for fun. Cadets participate in wide variety of sports, both team and individual disciplines and can achieve sporting blues and can even represent the Corps!
    The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award
The Air Cadet Organisation is the single biggest operator of the scheme. Cadets are achieving their bronze, silver and gold awards across the Region.

    Adventure Training
Fancy abseiling down a 30ft wall? How about rock climbing, parachuting or canoeing down a river? As an Air Cadet, take the opportunity to challenge yourself!

    Target Shooting
Safety underpins all aspects of cadet rifle training. Cadets are supervised by trained and qualified members of staff continuously during their time on the range, and must pass safety tests before being allowed to handle rifles themselves. Through this nationally recognised popular sport cadets learn self-discipline, patience and concentration, and can take aim to achieve marksmanship badges or even compete to achieve the “cadet 100” badge, reserved for the top 100 sharp-shooters in the Country.

    Leadership Training
Test your leadership potential, build your self-confidence and make lifelong friendships in the process!

    Academic Qualifications
Cadets can achieve BTEC awards in Aviation Studies, Public Services and Music, equivalent to 10 GCSEs grades A* – C! Academic qualifications are also available to our volunteer staff.

    First Aid Training
A valuable life skill which the Air Cadet Organisation supports through training, courses and formal qualifications for both cadets and volunteers, may of whom have used this skill to preserve life in real first aid situations.

    Communications Training
The ACO has its own radio networks for cadets to practice radio operating procedures and techniques and to exchange messages around the UK and overseas. Radio Communications forms part of the Air Cadet syllabus and particpating cadets can gain up to 3 certificates – from their Provisional Radio Operators’ Certificates through to the Communicators Badge, where cadets need to demonstrate advanced and technical radio operating skills. Qualified cadets can work as radio operators at events, passing vital safety and administrative messages.

    Drill & Ceremonial
Learn to wear your uniform with pride as you march in unison as part of a Squad or take pride of place in a number of massed parades across the Region.

    Music
Air Cadets in LaSER can play a variety of musical instruments and can work towards achieving a BTEC First Diploma in Music equivalent to 4 GCSEs grades A*-C. Some local Squadrons have their own music band which cadets can become members of. LaSER also runs dedicated band training weekends for all cadets across the Region, see LaSER Music for more details.

Annual Camps at home or abroad
Sponsored by the Royal Air Force and led by our volunteer officers, cadets can enjoy annual camps in UK Air Stations or abroad, during Easter and Summer school holiday periods. Work experience opportunities are a major part of these camps and provide an insight into cadets chosen vocational interests.

Aerospace Careers Courses, Regional Activity Centres & Wing Technology Centres
As part of cadets progressive training in aviation and related technology, LaSER are at the forefront of developing a hybrid Aerospace and Technology training programme to equip our cadets for careers in the aviation sector both civilian and military. Bespoke training camps and centres will be located within LaSER to inspire our cadets in aviation and technology careers.

Sound interesting? If you are between 13-17 years old, why not join your local Air Cadet Squadron and expand your horizons!

Over cadet age? Don’t be disappointed – we are always looking for volunteers to help make these activities a reality for our Air Cadets. We are looking for people to fill posts as Civilian Instructors, Chaplains, Uniformed staff and Civilian Committee members… the opportunities to make a difference are endless!
