YOU.matter representatives from the Air, Sea, Police and St John Ambulance participated in the Safer Learners event in early November held by the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Metropolitan Police Service (MPS).
The event was specifically developed as a forum to empower young people to develop ideas around tackling youth violence in their schools and communities. Each of the 30 schools from South East London nominated three young people to attend. In total there were 90 young people and 60 adults on the day.
The event gave young people an insight into the lives of those who have been affected by serious youth violence and workshops were used to generate ideas for the young people could take back to their individual schools. Initiatives such as establishing youth panels, lobbying local MPs, building relationships with local Safer Neighbourhood Teams were discussed as a means of breaking down barriers and fostering more effective community relationships.
The YOU.Matter team were on hand to talk about their experiences as Cadets and to inform the young people present of the key opportunities and activities available to them as members of their respective organisations.
Afterwards Cadet Warrant Officer Aisha Naibe-Wey said; “As a representative for London Wing Air Cadets, I was asked to help promote our organisation as a place for the young people of South London to be able to attend and be a part of. I gave a 5 minute presentation alongside the other three cadets and explained what the Air Cadets is about, my role within the Air Cadets and my achievements. The event was very successful and many of the attendees voiced their interest.”
As a consequence of the Safer Learners event YOU.Matter were invited to present to Harris School in Bromley and the Air and Sea Cadets were approached directly to deliver presentations at Charles Edward Brooke School in Camberwell.
