YOU London sees LIFE at Erith Fire Station

GLRFCA Rep Councillor Nigel Betts of Bexley joined YOU London Co-ordinator Michael Nolan on a visit to the LIFE course being held at Erith Fire Station on 17th March.  The course leader had asked YOU London to come and talk to the ten students about the wealth of opportunities offered by the YOU London organisations.  The students got an insight into all the YOU London organisations while special guests from 1579 Sqn ATC, OC Flight Lt Andrew Kelleher and Cadet Warrant Officer Megan Kelleher gave an excellent talk about Air Cadets.

LIFE is an intensive five-day course facilitated by Fire and Rescue Service and firefighters at operational fire stations.  The programme offers young people over the age of 14 the opportunity to learn new skills as well as building on existing ones.  The course is based on the role of the firefighter and participants take part in a range of activities from using ladders, casualty rescue techniques, wearing breathing apparatus and first aid.  In addition to this participants are given information on fire safety, prevention, consequences and healthy living.  The course culminates in a pass-out parade where the young people demonstrate the skills they have learned during the week to their families and carers.

LIFE Team Youth Engagement Team Leader Jack Swannell said, “It’s been hugely helpful to let our students know about the uniformed youth organisations. We thank YOU London for taking time out to talk to our young people.

It was very valuable input which will hopefully encourage them to take on these exciting opportunities”.
