"My confidence has increased so much, through meeting new people and all the skills I’ve gained, which will come in really useful later in life."

What all 11 organisations have in common is the desire to give young people amazing opportunities to develop themselves – gaining exciting new skills, working in a team, building confidence – in an environment packed with fun, action and adventure. You can play sport, travel both at home and abroad, camp, help out in your community plus take part in the specific activity of your chosen organisation. Stuff that will help you get the most of life.

If you like the idea of inspiring and leading young people to achieve things they never thought possible, then why not volunteer as an Adult Instructor (18+) with one of the YOU organisations? It’s a great way of gaining new skills and qualifications, and developing your talents and knowledge - all of which will not only benefit young people, but will be of real value in today’s workplace.

It’s not just about ‘giving something back’, it’s about being a valued member of a team, challenging yourself, getting to know your local community and making new friends – whilst making a difference to the lives of young people.

There are two ways to volunteer your time:

1. Most groups meet weekly, generally in the evenings or at weekends, and volunteers are needed to run face-to-face activities for young people or to provide support and ‘an extra pair of hands’ to uniformed instructors. All organisations offer the choice to wear uniform or to support as a civilian / non-uniformed helper.

2. All groups need administrative support which can often be done in your own time. Local groups need trustees, treasurers, secretaries and people to help with administration and planning. There are all sorts of opportunities to get involved behind the scenes, depending on your skill set and the time you have available.

No prior experience or knowledge is needed for any organisation as full training will be given. Opportunities to volunteer are flexible and can fit around the time and skills you are able to offer.

For more information, click through to the organisation that interests you, see what is in your local area and start a conversation about how you could support a YOU group.  This information sheet outlines the process for offering your services.

together we can do More

YOU London is a unique partnership of 11 of the most well-known experienced and wide-reaching youth organisations in London.
  • Air Training Corps
  • Army Cadet Force
  • Boys' Brigade
  • Fire Cadets
  • Girlguiding
  • Girls' Brigade
  • Jewish Lads' & Girls' Brigade
  • Sea Cadet Corps
  • St John Ambulance
  • Scouts
  • Volunteer Police Cadets
Each of the 11 is a successful organisation in its own right, with its own structure and aims, but by working together we can achieve greater impact. Working together takes many forms, including inter-group competitions, sharing premises, exhibiting together at recruitment events and being aware of who is who in London's youth groups. In terms of bids, resources, funding and influence, working together often produces for us much more than the sum of the individual parts. By sharing ideas best practice and resources we can:
  • Increase the number of adult volunteers supporting member organisations
  • Increase the number of young people joining member organisations
  • Improve and build on the activities and opportunities these groups offer young people and their adult instructors
  • Attract further funding and make better use of resources
  • Offer ever-growing numbers of young people the chance to get more out of life through fun, adventure and citizenship
