Haringey youth in competition with each other

42 young people from The London Borough of Haringey competed in the YOU Haringey Challenge on Saturday 25th June at the Tolmers Scout Activity Centre in Hertfordshire.  YOU stands for ‘Youth Organisations in Uniform’ and is a partnership of 11 uniformed youth organisations working together to enhance opportunities for young people in London.

YOU Haringey Competition

Teams from TS Wizard Sea Cadets, 212 (Haringey) Detachment Army Cadets, 216 (Tottenham) Detachment Army Cadets, 268 (Tottenham) Squadron RAF Air Cadets and Haringey Volunteer Police Cadets competed in a series of outdoor challenges designed to develop leadership, teamwork, problem-solving and communication skills.  Stands ranged from designing and constructing a wheelbarrow capable of carrying a bucket of water over uneven ground, to building a structure (above a certain height) able to take the weight of the whole team.  Orienteering tested fitness and map reading skills; the archery competition was all about accuracy, and pedal cart races proved lots of fun!

YOU Haringey Competition

The event was organised by YOU Haringey’s committee – a group of representatives from the uniformed youth groups in the borough working together to co-ordinate events for Haringey’s young people.  Captain Peter Baker, Representative Deputy Lieutenant for the London Borough of Haringey said: “We have not held this event for two years, so it was great to get the various groups back together again as YOU Haringey.  We deliberately hold the event on this date to mark Armed Forces Day.  The winners will be announced at Haringey’s Armed Forces Day parade tomorrow, with prizes presented by the mayor.”

This year’s winners were Haringey Sea Cadet Corps, TS Wizard, who are based on White Hart Lane in Tottenham.  The runners-up were 212 (Haringey) Detachment Army Cadet Force, based on Priory Road in Hornsey.   The winners’ shield was presented by Councillor Gina Adamou, Mayor of The London Borough of Haringey after the borough’s Armed Forces Day parade at the Civic Centre in Wood Green.  Gold, silver and bronze YOU pin badges were presented to all competitors.
